Major Trade Buzz: Oilers Linked to Pair of Stanley Cup-Winning Goalies
The start of the 2025-26 season has been rocky for some contenders, and the Edmonton Oilers are no exception. The team is now likely monitoring several NHL goaltenders in hopes of shoring up their netminding and giving captain Connor McDavid the chance to finally capture a championship in Edmonton. According to Sportsnet’s Ryan Dixon, several options stand out—particularly after last night’s 8-3 drubbing at the hands of the Dallas Stars.
St. Louis Blues’ Jordan Binnington has reemerged in trade discussions, but his early-season struggles, a 14-team no-trade list, and a $6 million cap hit make a deal difficult. Nashville’s Juuse Saros has also been mentioned, though after signing a long-term, high-value contract and the team trading top prospect Yaroslav Askarov last year, the Predators are unlikely to part with their star goalie.

That leaves Jonathan Quick as perhaps the most realistic target. The three-time Stanley Cup champion—twice with the Los Angeles Kings (2012, 2014) and once with the Vegas Golden Knights (2023)—currently backs up Igor Shesterkin with the New York Rangers. Quick, nearly 40, could be available if the Rangers falter in the playoff race, offering veteran experience as a short-term solution for a playoff-hungry team like Edmonton. Another veteran to consider is Stolarz, who was part of the Florida Panthers’ first championship team in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens may also be exploring upgrades in goal, potentially complicating Edmonton’s pursuit. With several options emerging, trade talks are intensifying. The Oilers will have to balance veteran experience with long-term stability, and for now, Quick appears to be the most intriguing possibility. Meanwhile, Toronto also remains a team to watch in the goalie market.
