The most historic stadiums in CFL history
The Canadian Football League is built on tradition, and few things capture that history better than the stadiums where the game has been played. From legendary Grey Cups to dynasties that defined eras, CFL stadiums have been the backdrop to some of the most unforgettable moments in Canadian sports.
While some iconic venues are still standing and others live on only in memory, their impact on the league remains enormous.
Ivor Wynne Stadium (Hamilton)
Few stadiums are as deeply woven into CFL history as Ivor Wynne Stadium. Home to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for decades, it hosted more Grey Cups than any other venue in league history.
Ivor Wynne was known for its intimate setting and passionate fanbase, creating an intense atmosphere that made it a fortress on game days. Legends of the game built their reputations there, and countless classic moments unfolded on its turf before it closed in 2012.
McMahon Stadium (Calgary)
McMahon Stadium has been the home of the Calgary Stampeders since 1960 and remains one of the league’s most iconic venues. It has hosted multiple Grey Cups and witnessed several championship-winning teams.
Its open-air design, unpredictable weather, and loyal fanbase have made it a challenging place for visiting teams. McMahon represents longevity and consistency — two values that define the CFL itself.
Commonwealth Stadium (Edmonton)
Commonwealth Stadium stands as one of the largest stadiums in CFL history and has been the stage for some of the league’s biggest moments. The Edmonton Elks enjoyed long periods of dominance there, including multiple Grey Cup victories.
With its massive crowds and electric atmosphere during championship runs, Commonwealth helped cement Edmonton’s reputation as one of the CFL’s most successful franchises.
Exhibition Stadium (Toronto)
Although no longer in use, Exhibition Stadium played a major role in the league’s past. It hosted numerous Grey Cups and was home to the Toronto Argonauts for many years.
The stadium is remembered for its harsh weather conditions and challenging field, but also for historic championship games that remain part of CFL folklore.
Mosaic Stadium (Regina – old and new)
The original Mosaic Stadium in Regina was one of the most intimidating venues in the CFL, known for its deafening noise and passionate Roughriders supporters.

The new Mosaic Stadium has carried that tradition forward, blending modern facilities with one of the league’s most devoted fanbases. Together, both versions of Mosaic Stadium represent the heart of CFL fandom.
Percival Molson Memorial Stadium (Montreal)
Nestled into Mount Royal, Percival Molson Memorial Stadium offers one of the most unique settings in the league. It has been home to the Montreal Alouettes during several successful eras, including Grey Cup championship seasons.
Its smaller size and scenic backdrop give it a distinct character that sets it apart from other CFL venues.
BC Place (Vancouver)
BC Place stands out as one of the most recognizable stadiums in Canadian sports. As the longtime home of the BC Lions, it has hosted multiple Grey Cups and memorable playoff games.
Its retractable roof and downtown location have made it a marquee venue for major CFL events and championship games.
Why stadium history matters in the CFL
CFL stadiums are more than structures — they are living pieces of the league’s identity. They shape rivalries, fuel fan passion, and preserve memories that connect generations of supporters.
Even as new stadiums are built and old ones fade into history, their stories continue to define what makes the CFL unique.
