Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube shares devastating and scary update on Anthony Stolarz

The Toronto Maple Leafs could be without Anthony Stolarz for an extended and uncertain period, with the goaltender’s return to live game action now looking increasingly distant.

Speaking to the media on Saturday following the NHL’s holiday break, head coach Craig Berube was asked for an update on the injury that has sidelined Stolarz since November 11, when he exited a game against the Boston Bruins. Berube offered little in the way of specifics, but one word stood out — and alarmed Leafs fans: “indefinite.”

That description has only deepened the concern surrounding Stolarz, whose injury has been shrouded in secrecy for weeks. With no clear timetable provided and Berube seemingly ruling out a return anytime soon, uncertainty around the goaltender has reached a new level.

In Stolarz’s absence, Toronto has leaned on Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby, but neither has managed to replicate the standard Stolarz set last season. The netminder was outstanding in 2023–24, posting a 2.14 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage across 34 regular-season games — numbers that placed him firmly in Vezina Trophyconversations.

With Stolarz’s outlook now appearing bleaker than ever, the Maple Leafs look set to continue relying heavily on Woll and Hildeby, even as questions mount about whether — or when — Stolarz will be able to return.
