Ottawa Charge Coach Carla MacLeod Faces Health Battle, Vows to Stay Strong

The Ottawa Charge have shared an emotional update regarding their head coach, Carla MacLeod. In a heartfelt joint statement with the team, McLeod revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Despite the devastating news, McLeod remains optimistic and determined. She shared:

“I want to share some personal news: I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Hearing those words was incredibly difficult, but I want everyone to know that I’m going to be okay. I’m incredibly fortunate to have an exceptional medical team guiding me, and together we’ve built a treatment plan that gives me tremendous confidence in the road ahead.”

McLeod emphasized her commitment to her teams, stating that she hopes to continue coaching as much as possible. Her treatment is expected to have minimal impact on the Ottawa Charge season, and she will also remain involved with the Czechia Women’s National Team at the upcoming Olympic Winter Games.

However, she will miss the next game on Tuesday, December 2, as she begins her treatment. McLeod praised the Charge staff and players for their support, saying:

“Being with this team fuels me, and I intend to stay as connected as I can during treatment. Thank you in advance for the support and kindness I know our incredible Ottawa community always shows. It means a lot to me.”

The Charge also released a statement from General Manager Mike Hirshfeld:

“The Charge and League are here to support Carla throughout her treatment. Her strength, resilience, and optimism shine through in the most challenging of circumstances, and we know she’ll approach this next chapter with the same determination she brings to everything she does. Assistant Coach Haley Irwin will serve as Head Coach on Tuesday while Carla begins treatment.”

This is an immense challenge, but McLeod’s courage and dedication serve as an inspiration to all. The Ottawa Charge community is rallying behind her, wishing her a full and speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing her back behind the bench as soon as possible.
