What we know so far about the apparent fire at McMahon Stadium, home of the Calgary Stampeders

It appears McMahon Stadium caught fire late Sunday evening, according to multiple posts circulating on social media.

Video clips shared online suggest the blaze broke out near Gate 2 on the east side of the facility. Inquiries have been sent to the McMahon Stadium Society, the City of Calgary, and the University of Calgary for clarification on the incident. Updates are expected once more information becomes available. The Calgary Stampeders have declined to comment on the reported fire.

Opened in 1960 and situated on the University of Calgary campus in the city’s northwest, the stadium has hosted several marquee events. It was the site of the NHL Heritage Classic in 2011 and staged the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1988 Winter Olympics.

The venue serves as the full-time home of the Stampeders, the University of Calgary Dinos football team, and Calgary Wild FC of the Northern Super League. It is also scheduled to host the 113th Grey Cup on Sunday, November 15, 2026 — marking the sixth time the championship has been played there (previously in 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009, and 2019). The most recent Grey Cup at the stadium drew 35,440 fans as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33-12, with Keith Urban headlining the halftime show.

On the football side, Calgary was relatively quiet during CFL free agency but added former Toronto Argonauts receiver Dejon Brissett after his 907-yard campaign in 2025. The club did not lose any free agents to other CFL teams, though three players — Damien Alford (New Orleans Saints), Jaylon Hutchings (Minnesota Vikings), and Jacob Roberts (Minnesota Vikings) — signed NFL deals.

Calgary holds the sixth overall pick in the 2026 CFL Draft, set for Tuesday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. EDT. Training camps open May 10, with the Stampeders scheduled to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders in their preseason opener on May 18 before beginning the regular season against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on June 5.
