Maple Leafs stars Nylander and Rielly criticised over Matthews–Gudas controversy

Two stars from the Toronto Maple Leafs have come under intense scrutiny from fans after their comments about the controversial collision involving captain Auston Matthews and Radko Gudas.

Matthews’ season has effectively ended after he suffered a knee injury following a heavy knee-on-knee hit from the Anaheim Ducks captain. While many supporters in Toronto were initially furious with Gudas over the challenge, a large portion of the criticism has now shifted toward Matthews’ teammates for failing to react during the incident.

Defensemen Morgan Rielly and Brandon Carlo, along with forwards William Nylander and Easton Cowan, were all on the ice at the time. Many fans have questioned why none of them stepped in immediately after their captain was taken down.

Nylander and Rielly face backlash

Nylander and Rielly have faced the heaviest criticism after their post-game explanations appeared to contradict what viewers saw on video.

Nylander claimed that he did not clearly witness the hit unfold.

He explained that although he had passed the puck to Matthews moments earlier, he did not see the full incident and only later realised how serious it might have been. In hindsight, he admitted he perhaps should have reacted differently.

Rielly offered a similar explanation, suggesting he didn’t have a clear look at the collision because the play was moving the other way.

Fans dissect the footage

However, clips circulating online appear to show Nylander watching Matthews closely before and after the hit, leading many supporters to accuse the players of being less than truthful in their explanations. Screenshots and slow-motion replays have also been shared widely, showing several Leafs players looking directly at the play as it happened.

The situation has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with both Nylander and longtime Maple Leafs defenseman Rielly becoming targets for mockery and frustration among the fanbase.

Media criticism grows

Toronto media outlets have also been outspoken about the incident. Adam Wylde of SDPN argued that the video evidence clearly contradicts Nylander’s version of events, pointing out that the winger appeared to react immediately after the hit.

Wylde even suggested that the players’ explanations might have been influenced by team public relations efforts, before also questioning Rielly’s claim about the direction of play during the incident.

Meanwhile, JD Bunkis delivered a particularly harsh assessment of the situation, criticising the lack of response from Matthews’ teammates after the hit.

He described it as one of the most disappointing moments during the tenure of the current Leafs core, arguing that the captain had been left on the ice after a dangerous collision without any immediate pushback from his teammates.

The controversy has only intensified debate around the culture within the Maple Leafs locker room, with fans questioning whether the team showed enough unity in a moment when their captain needed support the most. 🏒
