Why Canadian Football League GMs are wary of pushing the season start forward

An earlier start to the Canadian Football League season from 2027 may excite fans, but it is creating significant headaches for football operations staff across the league.

With the schedule now set to begin on the Victoria Day weekend, the entire offseason calendar must shift forward. That includes the CFL Draft, which is expected to take place well before the National Football League Draft, leaving teams with far less clarity on player availability.

General managers, including Winnipeg Blue Bombers boss Kyle Walters, have warned that this timing will make evaluation and decision-making far more uncertain. Meanwhile, BC Lions GM Ryan Rigmaiden stressed the growing importance of strong NFL scouting connections.

The challenges extend beyond the draft, with training camps beginning before NFL opportunities are resolved, delaying the arrival of key prospects. Academic commitments and university scheduling conflicts — including exams and campus housing — are also expected to complicate rookie integration
