The reason Canada won’t take part in the 2026 Spengler Cup for the first time in many years
Hockey Canada confirmed on Friday that it will not take part in the 2026 Spengler Cup, ending a participation streak of more than 40 years in the historic Swiss invitational.
The absence is due to the expiry of a long-running agreement with the tournament organizers, with both sides unable to reach a new deal ahead of this year’s edition.

Canada first joined the tournament in 1984 and immediately won on debut, going on to secure 16 titles overall at the event hosted annually by HC Davos in Switzerland.
The Spengler Cup, founded in 1923, is one of the oldest invitational hockey tournaments in the world, with HC Davos holding the record for most championships.
Traditionally, Canada’s roster has been made up of Canadian players competing in European leagues rather than NHL stars.
Held every December, the tournament overlaps with other international events such as the World Junior Championship, making scheduling challenging during a busy hockey period. Canada’s most recent triumph came in 2019 against HC Ocelari Trinec.
