Mike O’Shea shuts down criticism surrounding Willie Jefferson’s sack decline

Mike O’Shea has firmly defended veteran pass rusher Willie Jefferson after concerns emerged over the star defender’s declining sack numbers during the 2025 CFL season.

Jefferson managed only three sacks last year, matching the lowest total of his career — a figure he previously recorded over just five games almost a decade ago.

For some observers, the drop in production could point toward decline for the six-time All-CFL selection, especially after turning 35 this offseason. However, O’Shea appears completely unconcerned by the statistics.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach believes Jefferson’s impact stretches far beyond sack totals alone, pointing to the veteran’s all-around disruption and leadership qualities as key reasons he remains one of the league’s most valuable defensive players.

While comparisons have naturally been drawn with reigning Most Outstanding Defensive Player Mathieu Betts, O’Shea and others argue that sacks alone fail to capture the full picture.

Jefferson continues to affect games through pass knockdowns, quarterback pressure, and his ability to disrupt offensive schemes even when he is not finishing plays himself.

Advanced metrics still rate him highly as well.

According to Pro Football Focus rankings among CFL defensive ends with at least 300 snaps in 2025, Jefferson finished eighth overall despite his lower sack count. Only Julian Howsare, Malik Carney, and Clarence Hicks graded higher at the position.

Beyond his performances on the field, O’Shea also highlighted Jefferson’s importance inside the locker room and his willingness to mentor younger teammates.

“When he got here, he stepped right up into trying to help guys out,” O’Shea said.

“He’s always done that, since the day he got here.”

Jefferson’s leadership and experience have become increasingly valuable for Winnipeg’s defence, particularly as younger players continue developing around him.

And despite questions about age beginning to surface externally, O’Shea made it clear he sees no signs of decline slowing the Beaumont, Texas native down.

“He’s ageless, timeless,” said the Bombers coach.

“However you want to describe it.”
