“That’s cheating” – Major controversy erupts after ESPN commentator blasts Rasmus Dahlin during Game 4

Tensions between Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres escalated dramatically during Game 4 on Tuesday night — and the controversy quickly spilled into the ESPN broadcast booth.

Rasmus Dahlin found himself at the centre of a major debate after taking a high stick from Alexandre Carrier during the heated second-round clash in Montreal.

Officials initially signalled a standard high-sticking penalty, but the situation intensified after Dahlin showed referees that his bottom lip was bleeding. The officials subsequently upgraded the infraction to a double minor, giving Buffalo a lengthy power-play opportunity at a crucial stage of the game.

However, ESPN commentator Sean McDonough was not fully convinced by what he saw.

During the live broadcast, McDonough openly questioned whether the cut on Dahlin’s lip was actually caused by the incident itself, suggesting the injury may have already existed before the play occurred.

The veteran announcer then sparked even more controversy by implying Dahlin could potentially have been attempting to reopen the cut in order to ensure visible blood and secure the harsher four-minute penalty against Montreal.

The comments immediately ignited strong reactions among fans online, with some supporting McDonough’s skepticism while others accused the broadcaster of unfairly questioning Dahlin’s integrity during a playoff game.

The incident has only added more fuel to what is rapidly becoming an increasingly hostile playoff rivalry between Montreal and Buffalo, with emotions continuing to boil over both on the ice and beyond it.
