The Edmonton Elks have strengthened their training camp roster by signing American defensive lineman Brandon “B.J.” Thompson II, offering the former NFL draft pick another opportunity to continue his football career.

The six-foot-six, 244-pound edge rusher most recently spent time with the Calgary Stampeders, where he finished last season on the practice roster. Calgary later re-signed him for training camp, but he was released during mandatory roster reductions on May 13.

Before arriving in the CFL, Thompson began his professional journey in the NFL after being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He made one appearance during his rookie season, registering two tackles, and was also part of the Chiefs squad that celebrated victory in Super Bowl LVIII.

Thompson’s football career was interrupted in 2024 following a serious health scare. During a special teams meeting on June 6, the Arkansas native suffered a seizure and subsequently went into cardiac arrest. He was rushed to hospital and later made a full recovery, spending the remainder of the season on the non-football injury list before eventually being waived by Kansas City in May 2025.

At the collegiate level, Thompson built an impressive résumé during his final three seasons at Stephen F. Austin University. Across 33 appearances for the Lumberjacks, he totaled 79 tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss, 20.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and an interception, establishing himself as a disruptive force on defence.

Prior to his move to Stephen F. Austin, Thompson spent two years at Baylor University, where he appeared in 19 games and contributed 18 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks, and three blocked kicks before transferring.

In a related roster move, the Elks also announced the release of American wide receiver Ife Adeyi as they continue shaping their squad ahead of training camp
