Breaking news: Major blow for Winnipeg Blue Bombers as Jovan Santos-Knox ruled out for 2026
Winnipeg Blue Bombers are set to be without veteran linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox for the entire 2026 season after the experienced defender suffered a serious injury during training camp.
According to team reporter Ed Tait on Monday, Santos-Knox is not expected to feature this year after sustaining a season-ending setback on the opening day of camp. The injury came without contact, with the linebacker requiring assistance from medical staff as he was helped off the field — a crushing development for both player and club.

Head coach Mike O’Shea admitted the injury has been particularly difficult for Santos-Knox, who had returned to Winnipeg with high hopes after rejoining the organization earlier this year.
O’Shea explained that the Blue Bombers brought the veteran back because of the qualities he brings on and off the field, highlighting his leadership, professionalism, and style of play. The coach added that Santos-Knox had been eager to contribute significantly in 2026, making the setback even more heartbreaking after the opportunity was unexpectedly taken away.
The six-foot-one, 233-pound linebacker signed with Winnipeg as a free agent in February after spending the previous three seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks. During his spell in Ottawa, he established himself as one of the team’s most reliable defenders, tallying 209 tackles, five sacks, and two interceptions across 42 regular-season appearances. His performances in 2025 earned him the club’s nomination for Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
This latest chapter was meant to mark a return to familiar surroundings for Santos-Knox, who originally began his CFL career with Winnipeg in 2017. Across two seasons with the Blue Bombers, he produced impressive numbers, recording 136 defensive tackles, eight sacks, and multiple turnovers before departing in free agency.
The Connecticut native later joined the Edmonton Elks in 2019, though injuries restricted him to only four appearances. After opting out during the COVID-19 pandemic, he revived his career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, eventually earning All-East Division honours in 2022.
Over the course of his CFL career, Santos-Knox has built an impressive résumé, appearing in 111 regular-season games while amassing 549 tackles, 16 quarterback sacks, five interceptions, and four forced fumbles. His absence now leaves Winnipeg facing a significant challenge as they prepare for the 2026 campaign without one of their most experienced defensive leaders.
