CFL rule shake-up: How have CFL rule changes impacted season ticket holders?
CFL rule changes spark debate as league enters transition period
The Canadian Football League is entering a major transition after confirming a series of rule changes set to roll out over the next two seasons.
For 2026, adjustments include a modified rouge, a new 35-second play clock, and a requirement for team benches to be placed on opposite sides of the field. The league has also approved the removal of regular-season ties following a rules committee recommendation.

Even bigger changes are scheduled for 2027, including a shorter 100-yard field, reduced 15-yard end zones, repositioned uprights at the back of the end zone, and an expanded eight-team playoff format.
Reactions across the league have been mixed. Reigning Most Outstanding Player Nathan Rourke described the changes as “garbage,” while former stars such as Doug Flutie and Henry Burris have also questioned the direction.
CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston, appointed last spring, has largely defended the reforms, pointing to unanimous approval from the board of governors.
Fan response has been vocal and often critical, raising questions about whether the changes are affecting season ticket retention.
While online criticism has been loud, early data suggests the impact on renewals has been limited. In one example, around eight percent of non-renewals — roughly 84 season tickets — were attributed to rule changes, while a much larger share, about 45 percent (around 400 tickets), were linked to scheduling issues. Despite this, the club involved reported an overall strong renewal rate for the 2026 season.
The B.C. Lions noted:
“Out of those who did not renew, eight percent of season ticket holders or 84 total tickets cited rule changes as the reason. By comparison, we calculated 45 percent of season ticket holders or 400 total tickets cited the schedule as the reason. 2026 is a special season for the B.C. Lions with our Touchdown Kelowna games and backloaded home schedule that starts in Week 8. Overall, we’ve enjoyed an above average renewal rate for the 2026 season.”
Meanwhile, the Calgary Stampeders reported minimal impact:
“Season-ticket cancellations this offseason specifically related to the rule changes have been minimal. We have shown growth in our season ticket base for the first time since 2019 and for only the second time since 2015.”
Overall, while the rule changes have sparked strong opinions, early indications suggest they have not yet caused a significant drop in season ticket numbers across the league.
