Pittsburgh Penguins re-sign Evgeni Malkin to new one-year contract
Pittsburgh Penguins have officially secured the future of veteran forward Evgeni Malkin after agreeing a new one-year contract.
According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the deal carries a base salary of $5.5 million but could rise to as much as $9 million if performance bonuses are met.
The agreement puts to bed speculation that Malkin could return to Russia to finish his professional career, with the veteran now set to remain in Pittsburgh for at least one more season.
Since arriving in the NHL with the Penguins in 2006, Malkin has built a résumé that places him firmly among hockey’s elite. Despite sharing the spotlight with Sidney Crosby, he established himself as one of the league’s most dominant centres through elite production, playoff heroics and major individual honours.
Malkin claimed the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2007 as the league’s top rookie, later winning two Art Ross Trophyawards as the NHL’s leading scorer. He also captured the Hart Memorial Trophy in 2012 after a standout season.
One of the defining moments of his career came during Pittsburgh’s 2009 Stanley Cup triumph, when Malkin led playoff scoring and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as postseason MVP.
