Main reason Dustin Crum chose Montreal Alouettes over BC Lions revealed

Dustin Crum has opened up on why he ultimately chose the Montreal Alouettes over the BC Lions, despite strong interest from both clubs during the February negotiation window.

Crum revealed that around five to six CFL teams showed interest in signing him, with the decision eventually narrowing down to Montreal and BC. In the end, he felt the Alouettes offered the best overall fit.

A major factor in his decision was the culture built by head coach Jason Maas, which Crum praised as a winning environment that he had respected from afar for some time. He said the organisation’s identity, standards and consistency made a strong impression during discussions.

The 27-year-old quarterback signed a one-year deal with Montreal worth $140,000 in hard money for the 2026 season. He is expected to serve as backup to Davis Alexander while continuing his development within the system.

Crum also highlighted the influence of familiarity within the organisation, including former Ottawa executive Marcel Desjardins, who played a role in helping him enter the league and is now part of Montreal’s football operations staff.

Speaking about the Alouettes’ identity, Crum praised their discipline and consistency, noting their ability to avoid mistakes and “beat teams rather than beat themselves,” which he believes is a key reason for their recent success.

Now in Montreal, Crum is focused on learning from veteran figures such as Anthony Calvillo and Jason Maas as he continues working towards his long-term goal of becoming a full-time CFL starter.
