Former NHL star Joe Pavelski comments on Leafs and Oilers links
Joe Pavelski has addressed growing speculation linking him with NHL coaching vacancies, admitting there is genuine interest in stepping behind the bench one day amid rumours involving the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers.
In recent weeks, Pavelski has emerged as a surprise name connected to Toronto’s vacant head coaching position. While the speculation initially appeared unlikely given his lack of professional coaching experience, the former NHL forward has now confirmed there have been discussions.

Pavelski, who has only spent a limited period coaching minor hockey since retiring, acknowledged that the possibility of moving into coaching at a professional level is something he is seriously considering.
The former star forward explained that coaching has always appealed to him, adding that understanding the game was one of his strengths during his playing career. He revealed that when an opportunity arose to explore a role with the Maple Leafs, it was something he wanted to examine further.
Although he stopped short of revealing specifics, Pavelski admitted conversations had progressed as he weighs up what could be a major career change.
Given the pressure and expectations surrounding a hockey-mad market like Toronto, it is perhaps no surprise that Pavelski remains cautious about publicly discussing any potential move.
However, the Maple Leafs are not the only team reportedly in the mix. With other high-profile coaching positions currently open across the NHL — including in Edmonton — Pavelski confirmed he is also evaluating other possibilities.
The former forward explained that timing, family considerations and finding the right fit are all key factors in the decision-making process. He stressed that neither he nor his family are rushing into anything and are carefully assessing every option before making a final decision.
For now, Pavelski appears content to keep his cards close to his chest, but his latest comments have confirmed one thing — rumours linking him to an NHL coaching role are far more than simple speculation.
