Latest update on Toronto Argonauts plans to hire CFL coach Greg Quick as the team’s defensive coordinator
Quick has been part of the Montreal Alouettes’ coaching staff since 2021, initially serving as a defensive and special teams assistant before moving on to coach the defensive line and, most recently, the linebackers. During his time in Montreal, he helped guide the club to two Grey Cup appearances, including a championship win in 2023. Working under defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe, Quick has been immersed in an aggressive, attacking defensive system — an approach the Toronto Argonauts hope he can replicate with their own unit.

The veteran coach has limited experience as a CFL defensive coordinator, having called plays for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2015. That season proved difficult, as Saskatchewan finished 3–15, leading to head coach Corey Chamblin’s midseason dismissal.
A Baldwin-Wallace University graduate, Quick is no stranger to Toronto. He previously served as the Argonauts’ linebackers coach from 2010 to 2011, and again in 2018. His CFL résumé also includes assistant coaching roles with Montreal in 2014 and from 2016 to 2017, along with a stint as the league’s first Global scouting director from late 2019 until joining the Alouettes.
Quick’s coaching career began in 1983 at Emporia State University, where he rose to defensive coordinator. He later held assistant positions at several colleges, including Heidelberg, New Mexico State, Edinboro, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and San Diego, coaching on both sides of the ball. He also spent time as a college head coach at the University of Chicago, St. Norbert College, and Concord University, compiling a 48–112 career record.
Toronto operated with co-defensive coordinators Jason Shivers and Kevin Eiben last season, but Shivers will not return under new head coach Mike Miller, according to 3DownNation.
The Argonauts finished third in the East Division in 2025 with a 5–13 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Starting quarterback Chad Kelly missed the entire season after suffering a fractured leg in the 2024 East Final, leaving Nick Arbuckle to step in. Arbuckle threw for 4,370 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, earning team Most Outstanding Player honours.
Toronto ranked seventh in net offence, sixth in net defence, and seventh in turnover differential (-8). Spencer Brownled the team in rushing with 314 yards, Dejon Brissett topped the receiving charts with 907 yards, and Cameron Judgeled the defence with 79 tackles. The Argonauts also placed ninth in league attendance, averaging 15,109 fans per game at BMO Field — a slight dip from the previous season.
