Hockey Canada releases apology to Czechia over unacceptable behaviour

The IIHF World Junior Championship got off to an explosive start for tournament favourites Canada, who edged Czechia 7–5 in a thrilling and hard-fought opening clash. While the result provided a sense of revenge for the Canadians, the game was overshadowed by controversy after the final buzzer.

Following the conclusion of the match, Canada’s players left the ice without taking part in the traditional post-game handshake, prompting criticism and accusations of poor sportsmanship. The move broke long-standing hockey tradition and was viewed as a disrespectful gesture toward a Czech side that has had the upper hand in recent meetings.

Hockey Canada has since acknowledged the mistake and issued a public apology, taking full responsibility for the oversight and extending its regrets to Czechia, the Czech Ice Hockey Association, and the IIHF.
