Rangers weigh fresh possibilities as Artemi Panarin trade speculation grows

David Pagnotta stirred NHL trade talk on Monday when discussing the New York Rangers’ future. Speaking on Daily Faceoff Live, he questioned the team’s approach with Artemi Panarin.

“If the Rangers aren’t realistically competing for a Stanley Cup, then what are we doing here with Panarin? Let’s take some calls and explore the options,” Pagnotta said.

The Rangers currently sit seventh in the Metropolitan Division, leaving uncertainty about their championship window. Panarin, 33, remains one of the league’s top offensive players but carries a hefty cap hit and is a pending unrestricted free agent. Extension talks have yet to yield results, with the forward reportedly unwilling to take a discount.

While Panarin continues to perform at a high level, the team’s current roster raises doubts about their ability to contend for a Cup. Pagnotta’s comments underline the need for the Rangers to confront their situation. Taking trade calls doesn’t guarantee a deal, but it would signal a willingness to explore options before the March 6 trade deadline.

Moving a star of Panarin’s caliber would have major implications for both the dressing room and the fanbase, but doing nothing could be an even bigger risk for GM Chris Drury. The Rangers now face a pivotal decision: stay the course or consider bold moves to reshape the franchise.
