Leon Draisaitl speaks out after Tristan Jarry’s latest tough night in goal

The Edmonton Oilers closed out their pre-Olympic schedule with a 4-3 loss to the Calgary Flames — a result they certainly didn’t want going into the break. For goaltender Tristan Jarry, it was another difficult outing.

Jarry has struggled for consistency since joining the Oilers, and last night’s performance was a reminder of that.

He allowed four goals on 25 shots, posting a .840 save percentage. Over 11 games with Edmonton, Jarry has a 3.64 goals-against average and a .870 save percentage, numbers that highlight ongoing struggles between the pipes.

After the game, superstar Leon Draisaitl was candid about the team’s issues, pointing to coaching, team play, and goaltending as areas that need improvement. On what must change for the Oilers after the Olympic break, Draisaitl said:

“We’re giving up too many goals. We’ve got to be better. I think it starts with the coaches. Everybody. You’re never going to win if you have just 4 or 5 guys going.”

Regarding Jarry specifically, Draisaitl added:

“He can be a little bit better. It starts with us in front of him. But there are saves that our goalies need to make at some point. We’ve got to be better.”

Draisaitl’s remarks suggest that while the team recognizes some of the blame lies with the netminder, improvement must come from everyone on the ice — and from leadership behind the bench — if the Oilers hope to pick up the pace in the second half of the season.
