Canadian defender Jonathan Sutherland reveals his stance on the position he thinks he can play for Montreal Alouettes

Jonathan Sutherland isn’t certain where he’ll line up with the Montreal Alouettes, but the Canadian defender is confident he can contribute across multiple roles.

“I take pride in being versatile and flexible within the defence,” Sutherland told reporters. “I want to sit down with the coaches, learn the scheme, and figure out what makes the most sense. I’m ready to play wherever they need me.”

The 5-foot-11, 202-pound defensive back signed a three-year deal with Montreal after spending three seasons in the NFL with Seattle, New York, and Las Vegas, though injuries limited him to no regular-season action.

With Montreal fielding one of the CFL’s top defences in 2025, Sutherland could slot in at safety or strong-side linebacker. The retirement of Marc-Antoine Dequoy leaves an opening at safety, while veteran Najee Murray remains under contract at SAM linebacker. Though Sutherland primarily played defensive back at Penn State, his build is comparable to weak-side linebacker Tyrice Beverette, giving the coaching staff added flexibility.

Like many CFL newcomers, Sutherland expects to contribute on special teams — a role he embraces.

“I play fast, physical, and with an edge,” he said. “Special teams has always mattered to me. I’ll do whatever helps the team win.”

Drafted in the first round by Montreal in 2023, Sutherland stayed in touch with GM Danny Maciocia during his NFL stint and leaned on advice from former Penn State teammate Des Holmes, who spent 2025 with the Alouettes.

Born in Ottawa with family roots in Montreal, Sutherland sees the move as a natural fit. “After prayer and talking with my family, this felt like the right step,” he said. “I’m grateful to play in my home country again.”

Montreal finished 10-8 in 2025, reaching the Grey Cup before falling to Saskatchewan. The team led the CFL in net defence and posted a +8 turnover margin.
