Bill Guerin explains how the Quinn Hughes blockbuster trade came together
Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin appeared on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast to detail how the blockbuster trade for Quinn Hughes came together over the weekend. Guerin revealed that the deal moved quickly, with Vancouver Canucks president Jim Rutherford agreeing to the very first offer that was presented.

The Wild wasted no time seeing the impact of their new star defenseman. In Hughes’ debut on Sunday night, Minnesota cruised to a dominant 6–2 win over the Boston Bruins, who had entered the game riding a four-game winning streak. Hughes made an immediate statement, scoring a goal in his first outing wearing a Wild jersey.
After the victory, attention quickly shifted to Hughes’ future, with questions arising about whether he would consider a long-term stay in Minnesota.
Hughes said he is open to the idea, pointing to the team’s core, the hockey culture in the state, and the proximity to his home in Michigan. He also noted how welcomed he felt by Wild fans, even before the game began.
He added that Guerin’s willingness to make such a bold move could play a role in his decision down the line.
Hughes praised Guerin for committing significant assets to acquire him, noting that while other teams may have had similar opportunities, few were willing to pay the price Minnesota did. He said that level of belief and commitment meant a great deal to him and is something he will remember.
Despite the circumstances surrounding his departure, Hughes also spoke positively about the Canucks organization. He expressed respect for Jim Rutherford and the Aquilini family, describing how professionally the situation was handled and acknowledging that both sides felt it was time for a change.
Hughes revealed that Vancouver worked closely with his agent throughout the process, with Rutherford taking his comfort and well-being into account when discussing potential destinations.
According to Hughes, the Canucks made a genuine effort to ensure he landed in a place where he would be happy, emphasizing that the organization cared about him as a person, not just as a player.
