BREAKING NEWS: NHL changes ruling on Nathan MacKinnon’s goalie interference penalty

The NHL has officially overturned the controversial Major penalty called on Nathan MacKinnon during Tuesday night’s clash between the Colorado Avalanche and Edmonton Oilers. MacKinnon had initially been handed a five-minute Major for goalie interference, along with a game misconduct, after colliding with Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram—a decision that sparked immediate debate among fans, players, and analysts alike.

Had the NHL upheld the Major, it could have had significant implications for MacKinnon. The league enforces automatic one-game suspensions for players who accumulate a certain number of Major penalties within a short timeframe. Rescinding the call effectively removes any risk of that suspension, a rare move in NHL history that surprised many observers. While most agree the play didn’t merit a Major, the fact that the league officially reversed the decision has left some questioning whether MacKinnon’s superstar status played a role in the outcome.

The incident occurred during the second period of the game. MacKinnon crashed into Ingram in front of the net in a sequence that quickly became chaotic. Ingram was injured and had to leave the ice, replaced by Tristan Jarry. Replay angles showed that Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse inadvertently pushed MacKinnon toward his own goaltender, leaving the Avalanche forward little room to avoid contact. Many analysts had anticipated a downgrade to a minor penalty, but the officials initially stuck with the Major and game misconduct call.

The NHL’s reversal is a significant development, as rescinding a Major for goalie interference is extremely uncommon. The decision ensures that MacKinnon won’t face any disciplinary consequences related to this play, and it has reignited debates about consistency in officiating and whether star players receive special consideration.
