The Indianapolis Colts are set to sign B.C. Lions defensive back Robert Carter Jr. to an NFL futures contract that will see him join the team in 2026, according to sources.

Carter started all 18 regular-season games for the Lions in 2025 and was named the club’s nominee for Most Outstanding Rookie. He finished the year with 51 defensive tackles, five interceptions, one forced fumble, and a defensive touchdown. The cornerback also started both playoff games, memorably adding a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown in the West Semi-Final.

Standing five-foot-10 and weighing 175 pounds, Carter quickly became known for his playmaking ability. His leaping, one-handed interception against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats was widely shared across North America and is considered by many to be the CFL play of the year.

Before joining the Lions, Carter played at Robert Morris University, earning second-team all-conference honours in 2024. Over two seasons, he recorded 66 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks, 14 pass breakups, five interceptions, and two blocked kicks, while also contributing as a returner.

The Virginia native previously spent two seasons at UVA-Wise, where he produced 74 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 17 pass breakups, seven interceptions, and a fumble recovery, along with two kickoff return touchdowns.

Carter worked out for both the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts during the NFL window before securing a deal with Indy. While he remains under contract with the Lions for 2026, B.C. will retain his CFL rights through next season should his NFL stint end before 2027.
