“From Canada to the CFP: Akheem Mesidor Unleashes Defensive Masterclass as Miami Storms College Football Playoff

Defence ruled the night as the University of Miami Hurricanes punched their ticket to the next round of the College Football Playoff with a grinding 10–3 victory over the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday — and Canadian edge rusher Akheem Mesidor was at the heart of it all.

The Ottawa, Ont. native was relentless off the edge, repeatedly collapsing the pocket and disrupting the Aggies’ rhythm. Mesidor finished the game with five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks, but those numbers only tell part of the story. On 38 pass-rush snaps, he generated 10.5 quarterback pressures, helping fuel a Hurricanes defence that piled up seven total sacks on the night.

“You’ve got to affect the quarterback,” Mesidor said post-game. “That’s what we talk about as a D-line. If I see a matchup, I’ll tell Rueben (Bain Jr.), ‘Let me get this side.’ If he sees one, he tells me. It’s all about affecting the quarterback — and I think we did a pretty good job.”

Texas A&M controlled possession for more than 33 minutes and racked up 326 yards of offence, but Miami’s defence bent without breaking, allowing just a single field goal. The Hurricanes forced three turnovers, punctuating the performance with a game-sealing end-zone interception by Bryce Fitzgerald with 24 seconds remaining.

“We were locked in,” Mesidor said of the final stand. “As long as they don’t score, they don’t win. Everybody just does their job — your one-eleventh — and you’ll be alright.”

That composure defined Miami’s night. With the offence struggling to find consistency, the defence’s dominance allowed head coach Mario Cristobal to manage the game patiently, confident his unit would deliver.

“That confidence is off the charts,” Cristobal said afterward. “A year ago, we had a tough time stopping people. Tonight, they were the difference.”

Now a redshirt senior, Mesidor has been a pillar of Miami’s resurgence. Through 12 games this season, he’s recorded 51 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles, earning first-team All-ACC honours. Across 62 collegiate games split between West Virginia and Miami, he has amassed 196 tackles, 48.5 tackles for loss, and 31.5 sacks.

When Mesidor arrived in Coral Gables in 2022, Miami wasn’t bowl eligible. Three seasons later, the Hurricanes are back on the national stage — and thriving.

“It means a lot,” Mesidor said. “Last time I was in this building, I lost. To come back and get a win like this — the defence played lights out.”

Already the top-ranked player on the CFL’s scouting bureau rankings, Mesidor is widely projected as a high selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, ranked 18th overall and second among edge rushers on Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest big board.

Before that next step, however, the Hurricanes still have business to handle. Miami (11–2) will face the second-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl on Wednesday, December 31, with a national title still firmly in sight.
