Major decision made on Berube and Treliving after Maple Leafs fire Savard

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the midst of major upheaval during the 2025–26 NHL season, with speculation mounting over the futures of head coach Craig Berube and general manager Brad Treliving. What once appeared to be a perfect partnership has deteriorated as on-ice struggles continue to pile up.

Toronto’s problems have deepened amid a three-game losing skid, prompting decisive action behind the scenes. Assistant coach Marc Savard has already been dismissed, and many believed further changes could soon follow.

However, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the organization has drawn a clear line.

Reporting on Sportsnet, Friedman stated that Savard’s removal marks the end of Toronto’s coaching shake-up for now, with Berube and Treliving remaining in their positions.

Despite the stability at the top, the Maple Leafs face serious concerns elsewhere. Plagued by injuries and underperformance, Toronto sits bottom of the Atlantic Division with 35 points after 35 games—nine fewer than they had at the same point last season.

A major storyline is the form of captain Auston Matthews. The former Rocket Richard winner has struggled to hit his usual heights, managing just 14 goals in 30 games and tracking toward one of the lowest goal totals of his career.
