Revealed: What sparked Axel Sandin-Pellikka’s Red Wings hot streak
Axel Sandin-Pellikka has long been viewed as a cornerstone of the Detroit Red Wings’ future on the blue line since being selected 17th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. Like many young defensemen adjusting to North American ice, the 20-year-old endured early growing pains this season. Recently, however, the rookie appears to have turned a corner.

Sandin-Pellikka scored the game-winning goal in Detroit’s 5–2 victory over Vancouver on Thursday, becoming just the fifth Red Wings rookie defenseman since 2000 to record at least five goals in a single season.
His recent production has been particularly impressive. Since December 1, he ranks seventh among all NHL rookies in scoring, posting three goals and eight assists for 11 points — the most by any rookie defenseman during that span.
A key factor behind his surge has been a reduction in ice time. Early in the season, Sandin-Pellikka was asked to shoulder a significant role, averaging just under 20 minutes per game across his first 25 appearances. Since then, his workload has dropped to just under 16 minutes per night over the last 19 games.
With Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson handling the toughest defensive assignments, the pressure on Sandin-Pellikka has eased, allowing him to focus more on his strengths. The lighter workload appears to have helped his confidence and efficiency, translating directly into improved offensive output.
In the long term, the Red Wings envision Sandin-Pellikka as a dynamic, offense-first defenseman capable of holding his own defensively.
While that complete package may still be developing, his recent stretch offers a promising glimpse of what Detroit hopes he will become — and suggests that sometimes, less responsibility can lead to greater results.
