Evan Bouchard put together one of the most productive seasons by a defenseman in the NHL, finishing with 95 points in 82 games, a +25 rating, and logging over 24 minutes of ice time per night. Despite those elite numbers, he was surprisingly left out when the Norris Trophy finalists were announced.

The omission quickly sparked debate, especially since Bouchard himself admitted the decision was disappointing.

A deeper explanation has since emerged. According to analysis from Eric Cruikshank of The Hockey News, part of the issue may be perception rather than production. Bouchard has developed a reputation over time for occasional defensive lapses, and that narrative may be influencing how voters evaluate his overall game, even as his offensive output ranks among the league’s best.

Another factor is believed to be team context. During his 5-on-5 ice time, the Edmonton Oilers reportedly received a combined goaltending save percentage of around .889, significantly lower than what Norris finalists typically benefit from. That defensive environment can affect how a player’s overall impact is viewed, even if individual performance remains strong.

Cruikshank also pointed out stylistic perception as a possible reason. Compared to more visually dominant stars like Cale Makar or Rasmus Dahlin, Bouchard’s contributions can appear less flashy, even though the underlying numbers remain elite.

Speaking after the announcement, Bouchard acknowledged his frustration but said he could not let the snub affect him moving forward, focusing instead on continuing his development and team success.
