Toronto Maple Leafs’ star reveals unexpected thoughts on where Toronto sits in NHL
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies has made a surprising admission about his team’s position in the NHL standings, revealing that he hasn’t been paying much attention to where the Leafs sit as the playoff race heats up.
As of January 28, Toronto was eight points behind the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot, a gap that leaves little room for error in the closing months of the regular season. Despite this, Knies remains confident in the team’s abilities and is choosing to focus on performance rather than the numbers on the board.

“There’s still a lot of hockey left, and the standings are still close, so I really haven’t looked at it much, to be honest with you,” Knies told reporters earlier this week.
His comments show a level-headed approach, reflecting the mindset of many professional athletes who prioritize controlling their own game over worrying about the competition.
By concentrating on team execution and preparation, Knies believes the Leafs can still mount a push toward the playoffs, even if their current position in the standings appears precarious.
While there’s a fairness to his approach, there is also undeniable urgency. Toronto has a talented roster, but stringing together consistent wins is critical if the team hopes to close the gap in the Eastern Conference.
The Leafs can’t afford to fall further behind, and every game matters as the regular season moves forward. Knies’ confidence is admirable, but with only so much margin for error, the true test will come as the team works to translate that belief into results on the ice.
If Toronto can start collecting victories and maintaining momentum, Knies’ faith in his squad could be well-founded. Otherwise, by the time he checks the standings, the gap could be too large to overcome.
For now, Knies is keeping his focus where he thinks it matters most: on his team’s performance and the next game ahead.
