Breaking news: Ottawa Redblacks face penalty for exceeding 2025 cap limit

The Canadian Football League has fined the Ottawa Redblacks for breaching the 2025 salary cap.

Ottawa must pay $18,002, matching the exact amount they exceeded the limit. The penalty will not affect their position in the 2026 CFL Canadian Draft scheduled for April 28.

Despite the extra spending, the Redblacks endured a poor season, finishing last with a 4–14 record and missing the playoffs. Head coach Bob Dyce was dismissed after the campaign, with Ryan Dinwiddie appointed as both head coach and general manager. Former GM Shawn Burke has transitioned into a vice-president role.

The 2025 salary cap was set at $6,062,365, boosted by more than $400,000 due to the league’s revenue-sharing agreement with the CFL Players’ Association.

Teams were also granted a $50,000 exemption following a grievance, meaning Ottawa was the only team to exceed the cap.

Under league rules, teams exceeding the cap by less than $100,000 receive a dollar-for-dollar fine. Larger breaches trigger harsher penalties, including draft pick forfeitures.

The fine will be deducted from Ottawa’s equity payments and redistributed among the eight compliant teams, each receiving $2,250.25.
