Jakub Dobes steals spotlight with unforgettable quote after Montreal’s dramatic Game 7 triumph
Montreal Canadiens booked their place in the Eastern Conference Final on Monday night after edging past the Buffalo Sabres in a thrilling 3-2 overtime Game 7 showdown.
The dramatic moment arrived 11:22 into overtime when Alex Newhook unleashed a bouncing effort that slipped between the legs of defender Rasmus Dahlin and beat goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, sparking wild celebrations inside the arena and sealing Montreal’s progression to a blockbuster Eastern Conference clash with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Yet while Newhook delivered the game-winning heroics, it was Canadiens netminder Jakub Dobeš who captured the spotlight after the final buzzer with a postgame response that many fans are already describing as the defining quote of the 2026 playoffs.
After battling through two emotionally draining seven-game series — first against the Tampa Bay Lightning and now Buffalo — exhaustion would have been understandable for any player. Fourteen playoff games packed with pressure, intensity, and expectation can leave even the most experienced stars physically and mentally drained.

But Dobes looked anything but worn out.
When asked by reporters how he was holding up after such a gruelling stretch, the 24-year-old delivered an answer dripping with confidence and calm.
“No stress… I can still play another 40!”
The response instantly lit up hockey circles, perfectly reflecting the fearless mindset that has fueled Dobes’ remarkable postseason run. His confidence has become one of Montreal’s greatest weapons during this playoff charge, and his performances have backed up every bit of swagger.
Although he endured a difficult outing in Game 6, conceding six goals from 33 shots, the young Czech goaltender responded exactly how elite players often do — by delivering under the brightest lights. In the winner-take-all Game 7, Dobes stood tall, stopping 37 of 39 shots for an impressive .949 save percentage, including several massive overtime saves while Buffalo piled on pressure.
Across 14 playoff appearances this spring, Dobes has quietly built an outstanding résumé, posting a 2.52 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage — numbers that underline just how vital he has become to Montreal’s postseason dreams.
His rise has been impressive. Selected in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, Dobes announced himself with a shutout victory over the defending champion Florida Panthers in his NHL debut back in December 2024. He followed that breakthrough by collecting 29 regular-season victories in 2025/26 before etching his name into Canadiens history.
By winning Game 7, Dobes became only the fifth goaltender in Montreal history to record a victory in a winner-take-all playoff game, joining legendary company alongside Carey Price, Patrick Roy, Ken Dryden, and Jacques Plante. Even more impressively, he has now claimed two Game 7 victories in a single playoff run — a rare feat for a goaltender so early in his career.
The night was also filled with emotion away from the ice. Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis revealed after the game that he had spent much of overtime thinking about and speaking to his late mother, France, who passed away unexpectedly in 2014.
When Newhook finally scored the winner, St. Louis looked toward the sky before joining in the celebrations.
“I thanked her,” he said afterward, in an emotional moment that highlighted just how meaningful the occasion was.
Now, after overcoming another dramatic playoff test, Montreal head into the NHL’s final four carrying belief, momentum — and a goaltender who seems convinced he could keep playing forever.
