Breaking news: Ex NHL star defenseman Jack Johnson family jailed in federal prison ruling

Former NHL defenseman Jack Johnson was at the center of a highly publicized and painful family financial dispute during his early professional career. While he focused on hockey, he entrusted his parents, Kristina Johnson and John J. Johnson II, with managing his finances. Later reports and court documents alleged that they took out substantial loans in his name and built up significant debt without his full awareness, reportedly amounting to tens of millions of dollars.

Despite earning millions in the NHL, Johnson filed for bankruptcy in 2014, a development that drew widespread attention given his status as a former third overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft and a player for teams including the Los Angeles Kings, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Pittsburgh Penguins. The situation was widely viewed as a case of financial mismanagement and exploitation within a family setting, prompting sympathy across the hockey world.

In a separate legal case years later, a Pennsylvania federal judge sentenced Kristina Johnson to 15 months in prison and John J. Johnson II to 18 months after they were found guilty of falsifying documents during bankruptcy proceedings. The pair, who had operated a bed and breakfast in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, were also found to have submitted false financial information and concealed a bank account. They pleaded guilty in November 2025 and received their sentences in 2026.
