Winnipeg Blue Bombers have secured the signing of Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma on a deal that runs through the 2028 CFL season.

Elgersma opted to continue his career in Canada after facing uncertainty surrounding his work visa while pursuing opportunities in the United Football League. The London, Ontario native had been selected by the Birmingham Stallionsin the 2026 UFL quarterback draft, but delays meant he missed the opening three games of the season, only joining the team in a limited, unpaid capacity.

Despite exploring options south of the border, Elgersma made it clear he sees Winnipeg as a genuine opportunity rather than a fallback, expressing strong admiration for both the club’s culture and the CFL.

The 6-foot-5 quarterback previously impressed during NFL preseason action with the Green Bay Packers, completing 16 of 23 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions — good for a 104.6 passer rating. He appeared to be in contention for a depth role behind Jordan Love and Malik Willis, but was ultimately released after training camp, with Clayton Tune brought in instead.

Following his departure, Elgersma drew interest from several NFL teams. He had a workout with the New York Giantsshortly after leaving Green Bay, and later visits with the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, and Miami Dolphins, though none resulted in a contract.

Elgersma built his reputation at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he won the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2024 after leading the Golden Hawks to a Vanier Cup appearance. His standout performances also earned him a rare invitation to the Senior Bowl, making history as one of the few U Sports players to receive the honour.

Across four seasons at Laurier, he completed 72 percent of his passes for 10,230 yards, 76 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions in 39 games. He also contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for 572 yards and 18 touchdowns, while earning multiple MVP honours in the Ontario University Athletics conference.

Originally selected by Winnipeg in the second round (18th overall) of the 2025 CFL Draft, Elgersma had also attended rookie mini-camps with both the Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills before eventually signing with Green Bay in May.

Now committed to the Blue Bombers, Elgersma says his long-term goal remains clear — to establish himself as a professional quarterback and build a career doing what he loves, with Winnipeg offering the perfect platform to do just that.
