Chad Kelly back in action as Argonauts prepare for preseason clash with Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Chad Kelly is set to make his long-awaited return for the Toronto Argonauts during Saturday’s preseason opener against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Kelly has not featured in a game since suffering a serious leg injury in the 2024 Eastern Final, where he broke both his tibia and fibula. The setback required surgery and an extended rehabilitation period, making his recovery one of Toronto’s biggest storylines heading into the 2025 campaign.

Although there had been early optimism surrounding a quicker comeback, the Argonauts chose not to rush the veteran quarterback’s recovery. Kelly was never fully cleared for contact work during the season and spent extended periods training independently in Buffalo alongside his personal trainer. While the 32-year-old hinted at a return midway through the season through social media, Toronto ultimately opted against risking further injury and ruled him out for the remainder of the year.

Now, after nearly a year and a half on the sidelines, Kelly is expected to return as part of the starting lineup in Toronto’s exhibition clash. He will be joined in the quarterback room by Nick Arbuckle, Tucker Horn and Anthony Guercio.

Saturday’s matchup will also mark the first game in charge for new head coach Mike Miller, who is expected to field much of the club’s projected starting group. Several offseason signings, including DaShaun Amos, Robert Priester, Adarius Pickett, Jonathan Kongbo and Dakoda Shepley, are expected to make their debuts, while defensive tackle Ralph Holley returns following time in the NFL.

Toronto’s lineup also features several interesting selection decisions. Rookie Anthony Wilson is set to start at safety, while breakout performer Derek Slywka has been listed as backup strongside linebacker. New Global Draft addition Sione Toiais expected to partner Holley on the defensive line.

Elsewhere, special teams contributor Jack Cassar appears set for a temporary switch to fullback, while younger players will get opportunities on offence. Desmond Bland is set for an opportunity at left tackle, with Rush Reimer competing at right tackle. Qualan Jones will begin the game in the running back role, while emerging receivers Tyler Kahmann and Dimitri Stanley are also expected to feature prominently.

Several notable names will not suit up for the preseason opener, including receivers Jake Herslow and Makai Polk, defensive linemen DeWayne Hendrix and Jeremiah Ojo, as well as offensive lineman Anim Dankwah.

Toronto will travel to Hamilton Stadium on Saturday, May 23, with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EDT and coverage available on TSN.
