Mike Babcock delivers firm response to rumours linking him with Edmonton Oilers coaching job

Mike Babcock has firmly dismissed speculation linking him with a return to NHL coaching, including rumours surrounding the vacant position with the Edmonton Oilers.

Speaking earlier in the day, Babcock reportedly made it clear to TSN insider Darren Dreger that he has no plans to return behind the bench, stressing that he considers himself retired and has no interest in taking another role in the NHL.

Babcock was once regarded as one of hockey’s elite coaches, building an impressive résumé that included a Stanley Cup triumph with the Detroit Red Wings and Olympic gold medals while leading Canada men’s national ice hockey team.

In 2015, he took charge of a rebuilding Toronto Maple Leafs side and played a significant role in helping the franchise re-establish itself as a playoff contender. However, concerns over his management style increasingly overshadowed his on-ice achievements.

Several former players, including Mitch Marner, later spoke publicly about uncomfortable experiences under Babcock, with criticism emerging over allegations that he was overly controlling and difficult in his interactions with players.

The mounting controversy eventually led to his dismissal from Toronto in 2019. His attempt to stage an NHL comeback later collapsed before it truly began, as he stepped away from a role with the Columbus Blue Jackets amid renewed scrutiny surrounding his past conduct.

Now, Babcock appears to have shut the door on any potential return to coaching, ending speculation that he could be in line for the Oilers job or any other NHL vacancy.
