Done deal: Montreal Canadiens officially secure and signs Mike Matheson for a huge some of money
Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes has completed more behind-the-scenes work, re-signing defenseman Mike Matheson to a five-year, $30 million contract extension, averaging $6 million per season (2026–27 to 2030–31).
The 31-year-old blueliner, in his fourth season with the Canadiens, has been a key figure in the team’s progress.

Since arriving in Montreal from the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 16, 2022, Matheson has set multiple career highs, including 51 assists, 62 points, five power-play goals, and 28 power-play points during the 2023–24 season.
He also tied his personal best with 11 goals, matching his 2021–22 season with Pittsburgh. Overall, he ranks seventh in the NHL in average ice time (25:06) since joining the Canadiens.
