Larry Rountree III has secured the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ starting running back position heading into the 2026 CFL season after a strong and consistent training camp performance.

With East Division all-star Greg Bell departing to join the Ottawa Redblacks in the offseason, Hamilton entered camp with a clear need to identify a new lead running back. Head coach Scott Milanovich confirmed that the role was wide open, but Rountree ultimately separated himself from the competition.

Milanovich praised the 27-year-old’s progress while noting there is still development ahead in his game. He explained that Rountree is still learning the offensive system but has shown enough to earn the opportunity, with the coaching staff planning to keep his early responsibilities manageable.

Rountree outperformed a group of challengers including Shane Watts, Avery Morrow, Trent Battle, and Nahree Biggins. Watts, Morrow, and Battle were released, while Biggins has been moved to the practice roster. Veteran Canadians Johnny Augustine and Ante Milanovic-Litre will provide additional depth in the backfield.

The North Carolina native made a strong impression in Hamilton’s first preseason outing, rushing nine times for 86 yards, highlighted by a 46-yard run in difficult wet conditions. His explosiveness with the ball, along with his effectiveness in pass protection, played a major role in winning the starting job.

Rountree’s performance was strong enough that he did not feature in the team’s second preseason game, as coaches opted to preserve him ahead of the regular season. He also arrived at training camp in improved physical condition, shedding significant weight after transitioning from American football to the Canadian game.

Hamilton now heads into 2026 with Rountree firmly established as their RB1 as they reshape their offence following offseason changes.
