Kenny Lawler’s rise in the CFL: transformation from fiery talker to settled star receiver
Kenny Lawler says he has found “peace” with the reality that his NFL dream didn’t fully materialise, instead embracing a career that has turned him into one of the Canadian Football League’s standout receivers.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats star reflected on his journey from NFL hopeful to CFL leading man, stressing the importance of growth, accountability, and learning from setbacks rather than dwelling on missed opportunities. He described his approach to life as similar to studying film after a game, analysing mistakes and using them as a blueprint for improvement rather than regret.

Lawler was originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, going 243rd overall. He spent his rookie year on the practice squad and earned just over $182,000 USD, before a brief return to Seattle in 2017 ended with his release after training camp.
From there, his path to the CFL was not immediate success. After signing with the B.C. Lions in 2018, he failed to secure a roster spot, before eventually landing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers later that year.
That move proved pivotal. By 2019, Lawler had begun to establish himself, recording 43 catches for 637 yards and four touchdowns, including a standout 10-catch, 144-yard performance against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He played a key role in helping Winnipeg capture its first Grey Cup since 1990, a breakthrough moment that set the tone for his CFL career.
Lawler has repeatedly spoken about how early disappointments reshaped his mindset. He admitted he didn’t fully grasp the CFL’s team-first culture at first, but quickly learned the importance of fitting into a tight-knit environment where commitment matters as much as talent.
He also highlighted the sacrifices many CFL players make, noting that while some could earn more elsewhere, they choose the league for their love of football and the competitive environment it provides.
His 2021 season saw him lead the league with over 1,000 receiving yards in a shortened campaign, though it was also marked by an off-field incident that led to a brief suspension. Despite that setback, Winnipeg went on to win another Grey Cup, reinforcing the standards and accountability within the organisation.
Lawler says experiences like those shaped his understanding of professionalism and responsibility, and reinforced the idea that opportunity in the CFL must be maximised.
Now 31, his career has reached new heights with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. In his first full season with the club, he delivered a dominant campaign with 86 receptions for 1,443 yards and a league-leading 14 touchdowns, earning another CFL All-Star selection and a reported $1 million contract extension heading into 2026.
Head coach Scott Milanovich has praised his impact, describing him as an elite, complete receiver who has transformed Hamilton’s offence through his route running, physicality, and championship experience.
For Lawler, the journey from NFL uncertainty to CFL stardom has become less about what was lost and more about what was built — a career defined by resilience, adaptation, and finally, acceptance.
