Latest update on C.J. Reavis move to Ottawa Redblacks
During the holidays, C.J. Reavis’ girlfriend joked that she had dreamed he would end up with a team wearing red — and months later, that vision became reality.
The two-time CFL all-star played a major role for the Saskatchewan Roughriders during their championship run in the 112th Grey Cup. Widely regarded as the league’s top strong-side linebacker for back-to-back seasons, Reavis later shifted to safety after injuries sidelined Canadians Nelson Lokombo and Jaxon Ford.

That move opened the door for Antoine Brooks Jr., whom Reavis praised highly. Speaking to 3DownNation, Reavis described Brooks as one of the best athletes he’s been around, noting his rapid growth from special teams contributor to dependable starter. Brooks’ ability to make plays, including a pivotal interception touchdown late in the season, helped ease the transition and ultimately made Reavis expendable.
Ironically, Brooks made his first CFL start at strong-side linebacker in Week 18 against the Ottawa Redblacks — the same team Reavis would soon call home. That game at TD Place foreshadowed what was to come.
After the season, contract discussions with Saskatchewan stalled. Reavis said he sensed the direction things were heading even before official word came from general manager Kyle Carson. While appreciative of the opportunity the Roughriders gave him in 2022 — a move that changed his life — he understood the business side of football. Brooks Jr., still on his rookie deal at around $75,000, presented a younger and cheaper option compared to Reavis’ approximate $120,000 salary in 2025.
Though disappointed, Reavis entered CFL free agency for the first time with perspective. The Toronto Argonauts showed interest in him as a safety, and the BC Lions also reached out. Ultimately, he chose Ottawa, citing comfort with the coaching staff and familiarity with the defensive system.
Free agency moved quickly. While vacationing in Mexico, Reavis woke up unsigned and went to bed as a member of the Redblacks — all within hours.
He now joins fellow former Roughriders A.J. Allen, Habakkuk Baldonado and Jake Maier in Ottawa, aiming to bring a championship mentality to the nation’s capital. Reavis believes the Redblacks have long had the talent to contend but needed the right consistency down the stretch.
Looking ahead, he has circled two dates on the calendar. Saskatchewan visits Ottawa in Week 5 on July 3, and Reavis will return to Mosaic Stadium in Week 10 on August 7 — this time as a visitor.
While he tried to downplay the emotions of facing his former team, Reavis admitted there will be “extra juice” when he lines up against the Green and White. He’s eager for the opportunity and ready to put on a show in Regina.
