Linebacker for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Wynton McManis reveals Saskatchewan Roughriders interest during CFL free agency
Wynton McManis has revealed he held discussions with multiple CFL teams during free agency, including the Saskatchewan Roughriders, before ultimately deciding to join the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
The veteran linebacker admitted there was no shortage of interest during the league’s communication window, with Ottawa, Saskatchewan and Calgary all among the franchises he spoke to before making his choice.
Despite strong links elsewhere, McManis felt Hamilton offered the best fit both on and off the field, believing his personality and style of play aligned perfectly with the Tiger-Cats’ culture and fanbase.
“Sask is an attractive place for players too,” McManis admitted, while also praising his long-standing relationship with Roughriders head coach Corey Mace. However, the 31-year-old suggested the timing simply wasn’t right for either side.
Instead, a familiar connection with Hamilton defensive coordinator Brent Monson proved decisive. The pair previously worked together in Calgary, making the transition feel natural for McManis as he prepares for a new chapter in black and gold.
Although Monson’s defensive system has evolved since their time together with the Stampeders in 2019, McManis said he is embracing the challenge of learning new terminology and adjusting to changes in the scheme.
The experienced linebacker enjoyed a standout season under Monson in Calgary, recording 86 defensive tackles, nine special teams tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble before earning an NFL opportunity.
McManis also confirmed he is physically close to returning after injury setbacks interrupted his recent seasons. After a groin injury ended his 2025 campaign early, he missed Hamilton’s Week 1 clash with a knee issue but said he feels ready for the 2026 season and is working toward his Tiger-Cats debut.
Hamilton are next in action against Winnipeg on Thursday, June 11.
