Three-Time Grey Cup Champion Micah Johnson Retires, Joins Roughriders Coaching Staff

After 13 seasons of dominating CFL offences, veteran defensive lineman Micah Johnson has officially announced his retirement from professional football. Renowned across the league for his strength, durability and leadership, Johnson leaves the game as one of the most respected interior defenders of his generation.

Johnson’s decorated career includes three Grey Cup championships, five All-CFL selections and seven divisional All-CFL honours. His impact in the trenches and consistency over more than a decade established him as a cornerstone defender wherever he played.

The Florida native began his professional journey in 2010, making his NFL regular-season debut with the Miami Dolphins. After time in the NFL, Johnson moved north in 2013 and quickly adapted to the Canadian game with the Calgary Stampeders. Over six seasons in Calgary (2013–2018), he emerged as one of the CFL’s elite defensive tackles, helping the Stampeders to Grey Cup victories in 2014 and 2018.

In 81 games with Calgary, Johnson recorded 158 defensive tackles, 41 sacks and two interceptions, capturing two of his three Grey Cup titles during that span.

Johnson signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders as a marquee free agent in 2019 and went on to play 80 games in Green and White across five seasons (2019, 2021, 2023–25). He earned back-to-back All-CFL selections in 2024 and 2025, becoming the first 37-year-old defensive player in league history to receive All-CFL recognition.

During the 2025 campaign, Johnson registered six sacks for the second consecutive season while anchoring one of the CFL’s strongest run defences. He added 20 defensive tackles, including two for a loss. In 2024, he appeared in all 18 games, finishing with 28 tackles, four tackles for loss and six sacks.

Johnson’s versatility extended beyond the defensive line. In 2024, he stepped in as an emergency offensive lineman during the Labour Day Classic, playing two-and-a-half quarters at right guard. He also played a vital role on Saskatchewan’s short-yardage unit in 2025, helping quarterback Tommy Stevens convert 33 of 36 rushing attempts during the regular season. Johnson was instrumental in clearing space for Stevens’ opening touchdown run in the Roughriders’ Grey Cup victory.

Between his two stints in Saskatchewan, Johnson spent the 2022 season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, appearing in 16 games and tallying 24 tackles, five tackles for loss and seven sacks.

In total, Johnson retires after 177 regular-season games across Calgary, Hamilton and Saskatchewan, compiling 309 defensive tackles and 71 sacks.

Yet his influence extended far beyond the stat sheet. Frequently drawing double- and triple-team attention, Johnson consistently created opportunities for teammates, contributing to Saskatchewan ranking third in the CFL in sacks in 2025 and second in the West in 2024.

Off the field, Johnson has been equally impactful. As a Player Ambassador with the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation, he travelled throughout the province promoting mental wellness and literacy through the Win with Wellness and Rider Reading programs—work he will continue into the 2025 off-season.

Now settled full-time in Regina with his family since 2023, Johnson will remain with the Roughriders as he transitions into the next chapter of his football career, joining the club’s coaching staff as Defensive Line Coach.
