NHL Injury News: Canadiens’ Alex Newhook Out Long-Term, Canadian ice hockey defenceman Kaiden Guhle Also Injured

The Montreal Canadiens have faced a challenging start to the season, and recent injuries to Alex Newhook and Kaiden Guhle are adding even more pressure.

Both players are considered key contributors to the team’s success in November, and losing two promising young talents has raised questions about the team’s depth, the readiness of AHL call-ups from the Laval Rocket, and how the Habs can adjust their lineup to remain competitive.

The situation reached a critical point on Friday when the Canadiens confirmed that Newhook will be sidelined for four months following ankle surgery, while Guhle is expected to miss 8-10 weeks after undergoing surgical repair of a torn abductor muscle.

Newhook sustained his injury during Thursday’s game against Dallas after colliding with Ilya Lyubushkin and hitting the boards feet-first. Guhle’s injury, meanwhile, dates back to an October 17 game against Nashville, gradually worsening over time.

With Newhook and Guhle out for extended periods, Montreal’s depth will face a severe test, and the performance of any call-ups could determine whether the Canadiens remain in contention for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Every lineup decision has become crucial.

To fill the void left by Newhook, the Canadiens will likely turn to their AHL affiliate.

Jared Davidson is a top candidate, bringing energy and forechecking ability, and currently leads Laval with nine goals. Sean Farrell is another potential option, offering playmaking skills and offensive upside similar to Newhook’s.

Joshua Roy remains a possibility, though the team may hesitate to disrupt his productive top-line role in Laval.

For defensive reliability and strong faceoff performance, Owen Beck is a practical choice, while Filip Mesar represents a creative, high-upside dark horse.
