Ryan Dinwiddie left disappointed as Ottawa Redblacks debut goes off track
The Ottawa Redblacks’ new era under Ryan Dinwiddie got off to a frustrating start on Saturday night, as costly mistakes and missed opportunities saw them fall to a 29-21 defeat against the Edmonton Elks.
Heading into the season, Ottawa hoped the arrival of Dinwiddie and changes to the coaching staff would spark improvement, but instead the team struggled to find rhythm in a performance plagued by errors.

Much of the spotlight was on quarterback Jake Maier, who became Ottawa’s seventh different season-opening starter in the last eight years. Making his first appearance for the franchise, the 29-year-old showed flashes of quality in difficult weather conditions but failed to fully convince.
Playing through heavy rain, Maier completed 22 of 37 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown. While he avoided turnovers officially, Edmonton defenders dropped two potential interceptions, and several mistimed throws suggested he was still building chemistry with his receivers. A number of dropped passes also prevented his numbers from looking stronger.
The Redblacks’ offensive approach also raised eyebrows. Despite wet conditions and strong production from the running game, Ottawa leaned heavily on the pass, throwing the ball 37 times while rushing only 14 times. Even with Daniel Adeboboye averaging over seven yards per carry, the team never fully committed to establishing the run.
Ottawa’s struggles were reflected in their lack of sustained drives. Half of their 16 possessions ended in quick two-and-outs, while turnovers, failed fourth-down attempts, and a costly time-count violation further disrupted momentum.
Still, there were a few positives. The Redblacks converted both of their red-zone opportunities into touchdowns and were efficient on third down, succeeding on five of six attempts.
Adeboboye emerged as one of Ottawa’s standout performers after unexpectedly being thrust into a larger role. With Greg Bell sidelined due to neck stiffness, Elijah Collins got the start but was benched after fumbling in the second quarter.
That opened the door for Adeboboye, who impressed with 87 rushing yards and a touchdown from 12 carries. He also contributed in pass protection, delivering a key block that helped create Justin Hardy’s late touchdown catch.
The receiving unit endured a difficult night as timing issues between Maier and his targets repeatedly surfaced. Eugene Lewis and Keelan White each saw nine targets but struggled to turn opportunities into major production, while newcomer Ayden Eberhardt and Kalil Pimpleton offered flashes.
On the offensive line, first overall CFL Draft pick Giordano Vaccaro handled his debut admirably at right guard. Ottawa’s front generally held up well, allowing just one sack while helping the run game average over six yards per carry.
Defensively, Ottawa had reasons for encouragement despite the defeat. The unit limited Edmonton to one touchdown in four red-zone visits and responded well after being placed in difficult positions by offensive mistakes.
Nyles Morgan, Bennett Williams, and Shakur Brown all produced strong performances, but two explosive plays from Edmonton running back Justin Rankin ultimately proved decisive. A 63-yard touchdown reception and a 61-yard run exposed missed tackles that Ottawa simply could not recover from.
Special teams also played a damaging role in the loss. A time-count violation erased a made field goal from Brett Lauther, while poor punt coverage repeatedly handed Edmonton favourable field position.
Although there were moments of promise, Dinwiddie’s first game in charge highlighted plenty of issues that need addressing. With another tough test against Toronto looming, Ottawa will be hoping for a sharper, more disciplined display as they attempt to avoid an early-season stumble.
