Fresh setback fears as head coach and general manager for the Calgary Stampeders Dave Dickenson addresses Reggie Begelton and Folarin Orimolade injuries

It remains uncertain when the Calgary Stampeders will be able to welcome two of their key players back into action, as concerns continue to linger over the fitness of star receiver Reggie Begelton and defensive lineman Folarin Orimolade.

Head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson provided an update on both players on Sunday, the opening day of training camp, explaining that they are currently classified as “injured veterans” — a designation used for players who have yet to complete their full medical clearance.

Dickenson noted that while both athletes are making progress in their recoveries, their situations remain unpredictable on a day-to-day basis. He stressed that the club is being cautious with their return, with the hope of having both available for Week 1, although he admitted that their participation in the season opener is still uncertain.

Begelton’s injury concerns stem from last season’s Week 2 victory over Toronto, where he was forced off the field with what was later diagnosed as a fractured leg. The 32-year-old wide receiver has been one of Calgary’s standout performers, earning three CFL All-Star selections and recording 427 receptions, 5,660 receiving yards, and 28 touchdowns across 88 regular-season appearances. He is also among the league’s highest-paid receivers, ranked 13th in salary.

Orimolade, meanwhile, is continuing his recovery from a torn Achilles suffered in September. The 30-year-old defensive lineman had a productive 2025 campaign, registering 19 tackles and four sacks in 12 games after returning to Calgary via trade. He is currently one of the top-paid defensive linemen in the league, ranked fifth.

Dickenson emphasised the dedication of both players, praising their work ethic while acknowledging that recovery ultimately depends on how their bodies respond. He also pointed out the logistical challenge of managing their rehabilitation, noting that both players spend time away from Calgary during the offseason, which limits the team’s ability to closely monitor their progress and provide consistent medical support.

While the club remains hopeful of having both Begelton and Orimolade available early in the season, their exact return timeline remains uncertain as the Stampeders continue to take a cautious approach to their rehabilitation.
