Calgary Stampeders stick to their core, make minor adjustments in 2026 CFL free agency
Calgary Stampeders return to tradition, prioritize development over drama in 2026 CFL free agency
As the 2026 CFL free agency period gets underway, the Calgary Stampeders have once again demonstrated that they march to the beat of their own drum. Unlike many other teams that use the window to make high-profile splashes, Calgary’s approach was measured, strategic, and deeply rooted in a long-standing philosophy of building from within.
For years, the Stampeders have eschewed raiding rival CFL rosters, preferring to nurture their own talent while supplementing the squad with judicious additions from the draft or from south of the border. That tradition continued this offseason. Following a 2025 campaign that saw Calgary make gains on the back of a focused defensive strategy and a rejuvenated offense, the team’s front office opted for continuity rather than headline-grabbing signings.
The only new names added during free agency were receiver Dejon Brissett, defensive back Devodric Bynum, and running back Deonta McMahon — three acquisitions that reflect both necessity and foresight rather than a desire to chase star power. Losing Damien Alford, the former first-overall pick, was a setback in the receiving corps. However, the signing of Brissett, a former Grey Cup Most Outstanding Canadian who excelled last season in Toronto with 65 receptions for 907 yards, provides a reliable downfield target capable of stepping up in big moments. Though he does not replicate Alford’s physical mismatch potential, Brissett brings proven talent and consistency to a Stampeders unit that has been searching for playoff success.
On the defensive side, Calgary has doubled down on its turnover-focused approach, which was a major reason for last season’s progress. With 44 takeaways and a +9 turnover ratio, the Stampeders’ defense was a major factor in their improved win total.

Signing Devodric Bynum from the Edmonton Elks aims to reinforce that philosophy. Bynum, who notched five interceptions in his last healthy season, is expected to restore his form after missing the majority of 2025 due to injury.
Finally, Deonta McMahon, a running back previously with Toronto, provides depth behind 2025 CFL rushing champion Dedrick Mills. At just 26 years old, McMahon has plenty of room to develop and should offer reliable contributions in short-yardage and rotational roles.
While fans may stumble over the pronunciation of his name, his potential impact is clear: another tool for a Stampeders roster built on balance, versatility, and development.
In addition to the three newcomers, Calgary retained 15 of their pending free agents, while 11 were allowed to leave — several of whom are expected to retire or pursue opportunities elsewhere, including Adam Bighill, Kyle Saxelid, and William Langlais. The strategy reflects a careful balance of maintaining core continuity while refreshing the roster where necessary.
What stands out this offseason is the sheer number of rookies brought in to bolster the squad — 23 players without prior CFL experience have now been added. This influx of talent demonstrates that Calgary is looking ahead, investing in scouting and player development to build a sustainable contender rather than relying on short-term free agency coups.
Ultimately, the Stampeders’ 2026 approach is about returning to their roots: disciplined roster management, smart additions, and a commitment to developing talent internally. While other clubs chase marquee signings and instant headlines, Calgary continues to prove that quiet, calculated moves — coupled with a strong focus on drafting and player development — may be the best path back to the top of the CFL standings.
