Kristijan Trapanovski’s Transformation: A New Perspective Fuels Dundee United Comeback
Macedonian Winger’s Injury Ordeal Sparks Renewed Appreciation and Drive

Kristijan Trapanovski, the 26-year-old Dundee United winger, has emerged from a challenging 10-week hamstring injury with a revitalized outlook, vowing to cherish every moment on the pitch. Speaking exclusively to Courier Sport on October 22, 2025, the Macedonian international reflected on how his latest setback—his third hamstring injury since September 2024—has shifted his mindset, moving away from letting on-field fortunes dictate his emotions to embracing the joy of simply being fit and playing. His return, marked by a stunning goal in a 1-1 draw at Rangers on October 18, signals a player ready to make a significant impact as United push for a top-six finish in the Scottish Premiership.
A Changed Man After Injury Hell
Trapanovski’s injury, sustained against UNA Strassen in late July 2025 during UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers, sidelined him for nearly four months across three separate hamstring issues since last season. The timing was particularly cruel, coming a day after he expressed his determination to stay injury-free following a disrupted 2024/25 campaign. However, the enforced break gave him time to reflect, fostering a newfound patience and gratitude.
“Every injury is bad, but when you’re out for a long period, you have a lot to think about,” Trapanovski told Courier Sport. “I think I have become a little bit more patient and appreciate more stuff now. I come every day smiling at training, I appreciate that I’m healthy, training and I’m enjoying my football – that’s it for me. When fit and healthy, I would just go to training and if I don’t play, I’m angry. If I score, I’m happy. But when you’re injured, you realise everything you have missed. You just want to get there and do the training, score some goals; have the competition and adrenaline, no matter what else happens.”
This shift has been pivotal. Previously, Trapanovski’s mood swung with his performances—anger at benchings, elation at goals. Now, the mere act of training and competing brings fulfillment, a perspective sharpened by missing 18 matches since joining United in July 2024 from Shkupi.
Patience Pays Off in Recovery

Trapanovski credited United’s medical team for their meticulous approach, which prioritized long-term recovery over a rushed return. “I need to give a shout out to the medical team who’ve been patient behind the scenes for a couple of months,” he said. “It was not a nice injury but I’m happy now and working on my fitness. Although not fully fit for 90 minutes yet, I’ve got some hard weeks behind me and I’m hoping that I will continue this way. We didn’t rush this time. The medical team were so nice to me, and we were careful on everything to make it right.”
This cautious rehabilitation has borne fruit. Trapanovski made a lively substitute appearance against Livingston on October 5, nearly setting up a goal for Amar Fatah, and followed it with a spectacular strike at Ibrox—his first United goal since May 3, 2025, against Raith Rovers. “You don’t score every day at Ibrox, so it was a happy thing for me after a tough period,” he smiled, highlighting the emotional weight of the moment.
Fighting for a Starting Spot
With United sitting fourth in the Premiership with 20 points from 10 matches, Trapanovski faces stiff competition for a starting role against St Mirren on October 26. Manager Jim Goodwin has options, with Ivan Dolček hooked at halftime in United’s last two games and Amar Fatah struggling against Rangers. Zac Sapsford, another versatile winger, adds further depth. Trapanovski welcomes the challenge: “I think the competition for places is good for all the players. It means we need to try every day to give a maximum; try to be better than the other guys. But in the end, we are the same team. If I’m in the team and playing well, I think the guys are happy. If the other guys are doing good, I’m happy. Everyone is here for Dundee United – to make good results for the club.”
Goodwin, who has noted United’s youthful squad (average age 24.2, the league’s youngest) as a factor in their nine dropped points from winning positions, will weigh Trapanovski’s flair and recent form against his fitness limitations. The winger’s direct running and goal threat—evident in his five goals and three assists in 22 appearances last season—could be crucial against a St Mirren side sitting fifth.
Context: United’s Youth and Trapanovski’s Role
Trapanovski’s resurgence aligns with United’s broader narrative of resilience amid a demanding schedule. After exiting the Europa Conference League on penalties to Rapid Vienna in August, United have defied expectations, holding their own against top sides like Rangers and Hearts. Trapanovski’s return bolsters a squad stretched by injuries to Ross Graham, Ryan Strain, Dario Naamo, Amar Fatah (now recovering), and Isaac Pappoe, whose knee injury sidelined him long-term. New signings like Julius Eskesen and the potential return of Luca Stephenson add depth, but Trapanovski’s emotional maturity and attacking spark could be a game-changer.
As United prepare for St Mirren and a looming clash with Celtic on December 17, Trapanovski’s transformed mindset—focusing on joy over frustration—mirrors Goodwin’s call for his young squad to “learn quickly” in managing leads. With the Premiership tighter than ever (13 points from top to bottom), Trapanovski’s hunger to seize every opportunity could help United secure a coveted European spot.
